This time of year, all eyes are looking towards summer vacation. 15 weeks of school left, grandparents haven't seen the grandkids in a year, and frankly I need to be in a country that understands personal space for a little while. I was on FB this morning (Yes, I'm an addict. I like to know how you're feeling and the cute things your kids have to say.) and on a friends page was a complaint about not seeing her last summer. Apparently after flying on a plane for 30 hours with three children and changing time zones by 12 hours, my friend refused to drive an hour to visit her friend.
So this is in honor of all my Expat friends who will converge upon the States this summer. Please, Please, Please come to US! I know your summer is busy and there are lots of activities you can't live without, but I have traveled across the world with smelly people packed like sardines in a flying tin can just to be in the same state as you. If you really want to see me, pack up the car and the kids and drive an hour across town to me. And let me tell you a little secret, most of us even come bearing gifts from our host country. I can't work people, I spend all year shopping and collecting goodies to share with my friends and family. If you don't want to see me, that's OK too, but don't complain. :)
My personal countdown has begun, so clear a week and come sit on my porch with me in the country. I'll have a pitcher of margaritas and a basket of goodies to share.
